Excellence Centre for development cooperation – exceed

exceed project: Sustainable Water Management in Developing Countries

Decades ago the UN put the issue of ecological sustainability on the political agenda and highlighted the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as one of the most important goals of the century.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development the DAAD Exceed Programme was mandated to adapt to the MDGs and to give contribution to Sustainable Development.

During the five Years of the DAAD Exceed Programme, the Excellence Centre for Development Cooperation at the Technische Universität Braunschweig has particularly laid emphasis on water-related issues and sustainable solution approaches. The latter is strongly associated with the Braunschweig Exceed project dealing with “Sustainable Water Management”.

Working together in a worldwide net of regional partners from universities, public authorities and organizations helped to build the necessary knowledge and competences as well as to address the MDGs. The numerous network activities provided the breeding ground for the project’s success in this respect.

With focus on engineering, natural, and social sciences the SWM project was consequently using an interdisciplinary approach alongside appropriate methods and technologies dealing with the supply, usage, purification, and reutilization of water. It can be stated that within the frame of the SWM project the eminence of the topic »water« has become apparent within the developing countries.
