Expert-Seminar on Sustainable Flood Risk Analysis and Management, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, September 19, 2011


The “Excellence Center for Development Cooperation – Sustainable Water Management” at TU Braunschweig in collaboration with the University of Bahir Dar organized an Expert-Seminar on Sustainable Flood Risk Analysis and Management held at the University of Bahir Dar in Ethiopia from September 19th to October 1st 2011.

The Expert Seminar provided fundamental scientific and technical knowledge on all aspects of the whole risk chain which for risk sources comprise knowledge and models to understand and predict e.g. storm surges and rain fall events in flood vulnerable areas. Twenty international participants from developing countries were invited to join the seminar. Lectures were held by international experts who came from Germany, France, Great Britain, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Main topics of the seminar were:

  • Risk sources: coastal floods, fluvial floods, flash floods
  • Risk pathways: flood defence systems and structures, fault tree and reliability analysis, flood wave propagation
  • Risk receptors: overview of methodologies, risk management before flood event, risk management during flood event, risk management after flood event
