Summer School on Water and International Relations, TU Braunschweig, September 05- 16, 2011

Overview

In the period of 5 – 16 September, 2011 the “Excellence Center for Development Cooperation – Sustainable Water Management” at TU Braunschweig invited 20 international scholars to the EXCEED “Summer School on Water and International Relations”. The event was composed of lectures, discussions in class and selfstudy which were supervised by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Menzel. Additionally, participants were asked to present a poster dealing with typical water problems and conflicts of their home countries.

In the first week the lectures were theory-oriented and served as introduction to Development Policy, Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, International Political Economy and the concept of the “Green State”.

The second week was policy-oriented dealing with questions such as ‘What are the Millennium Development Goals with respect to water?’, ‘How can the Transboundary Freshwater Dispute Database be used in order to analyze cooperation and conflict concerning shared river basins?’, ‘How can the lack of water in arid countries be substituted by the import of virtual water?’ and  ‘How does the World Climate Council work?’.
