2nd EXCEED Summer School “Water & Wastewater Treatment Technologies – Focusing on Marmara Research Center (MRC) Experience”, October 18 – 23, 2010, Tübitak, Turkey

The EXCEED “Summer School in Water & Wastewater Treatment Technologies – Focusing on Marmara Research Center (MRC) Experience” took place at TÜBITAK MRC Environment Institute Kocaeli, Turkey. From 18 – 23 October 2010, 15 international participants benefited from MRC’s strong expertise in sustainable water and environmental management and experienced a rich programme including lectures, site visits and excursion.

SUMMER SCHOOL IN WATER & WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES

Focusing on Marmara Research Center (MRC) Experience

The summer school was ended successfully providing theoretical and practical overview of the principal aspects of environmental technologies. In this fully programmed week, there were lectures focusing on TUBITAK MRC Environment Institute’s projects and experiences.

The lectures were on decentralized sanitation especially for small municipalities, remote areas and tourism areas, about Ecological Sanitation (ECOSAN) and utilization of nutrients,  Sustainable Concepts Towards A Zero Outflow Municipality (Zer0-M) and biofilm systems for decentralized water management, wastewater characterization and laboratory analysis techniques, segregated household wastewater, natural treatment systems and applications, membrane bioreactor, anaerobic treatment, compost technologies, electrochemical processes for water and wastewater treatment, chemical precipitation. The special adds of TUBITAK MRC  EI experiences were on Control and Management of the Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens Transferred by Ballast Water; Reidentification of Hot Spots & Sensitive Areas; Constitution of the Emergency Response Centers and Determination of the Present Situation of the Turkish International Waters for the Feasibility Works; National and Regional Contingency Plans; Ocean-Ecosystem Numerical Modeling as a Tool for Particulate and Dissolved Pollutant Transport Analysis.

Lectures were performed in TUBITAK MRC meeting holes and two technical site visit accomplished with great interest of participants. The results of “Training Satisfaction Evaluation Survey of MRC” showed that participants are more interested on Ecological Sanitation, Electrochemical Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment, Zer0-M, Anaerobic Treatment Technologies, Membrane Bioreactors, Characterization of Wastewater, Natural Treatment Systems and Applications, Compost Processes, Segregation of Household Wastewater, National and Regional Contingency Plans, Control and Management of the Harmful Aquatic Organisms and Pathogens Transferred by Ballast Water, Ocean-Ecosystem Numerical Modeling as a Tool for Particulate and  Dissolved Pollutant Transport Analysis. Our site visits especially the one to a full scale Anaerobic Treatment Plant of food industry (PAKMAYA) were gained interest by participants.

The comments show that, the regional problems and their global solution examples are need detailed studies and lectures. The feedbacks showed that enlargement of experimental parts, site visits and case studies will enhance the EXCEED networking.
